Learning from our past to
influence our future.
The
SaveWaterTexas.com team of
experienced educators transports
students back in time to learn
about Life on the Texas
Frontier...emphasizing how
virtually everything they did
depended on access to water.
The
second grade assembly,
Life on the Frontier,
features an extensive collection
of “antiques” that were used by
frontier families to build and
maintain their homes, for
growing and preparing their
food, to make clothes, and the
equipment they used to obtain
and use water. The students each
receive a copy of a coloring
book along with related activity
sheets.

‘How
Windmills and Barbed Wire Helped
Win the West” — is
first-class “edu-tainment”
featuring a skilled narrator, a
series of historical “cameos”,
numerous display ‘stations’,
some hands-on learning
activities, and take-away
materials to punctuate the
experience. The program begins
by chronicling the settlement of
Texas and the six flags that
flew over the state. Students
learn about life on a cattle
drive and the importance of
water on the trail and on the
cattle ranches. The
program also includes stories
about the lives of some Plains
Indians important to Texas
history. The displays include:
small windmill and how it works;
Barbed wire fence segment;
student-sized Chuck Wagon, and
on-the-trail cooking “supplies”;
cowboy saddle, saddle bags,
rope, and bullwhip; maps of the
Cattle trails; famous
Texas cattle brands chart;
actual cattle brands, and more.

One of
the things that make this
Assembly program unique is that
the highlighted historical
events are inextricably tied to
the availability of WATER in
frontier Texas. The critical
connections are identified,
explained, and linked to the
importance of preserving and
protecting our finite water
resources a century later.
